Migration Activism and Technology
Using ethnographic and action research methodologies and values, we work with a local activist organization to discuss the limitations of technology use in highly precarious situations, how activists confront sociopolitical change, and the practices of community building and resilience within these networks.
Confronting Precarity - Reflections on the Current Landscape
Our research team employs design fiction to understand and communicate about the current struggles with conducting scientific inquiry during challenging sociopolitical moments. Using narration as a tool, we discuss the colonial legacy of the US and its role in shaping knowledge, along with the stakeholders implicated in this process.
Socio-Computational Ecosystem of Organizations that Support Resettlement
This work aims to understand the information and communication technology network of different systems who support migrants in the United States, especially during their immigration and naturalization process, to understand how to design better technical ecosystems for organizations and societal newcomers. We are currently finishing up this work in progress - stay tuned!
Positionality in HCI
I am currently working with Dylan Doyle-Burke and Dr. Bryan Semaan on a qualitative analysis of positionality statements on papers published in primarily CHI and CSCW. We are hoping to establish more norms and establish patterns of how, when, and why authors write them.
Past Projects
Computer Science Education Research
This line of research explores different pedagogical strategies to promote experiential learning in computer and information science settings. This looks at local and global classroom settings that promote different learning strategies for students. This resulted in three publications in SIGCSE!
This research focused on how top-down governmental toruism policies impacted local culture and society on a rural population in Maranhão, Brazil. After conducting semi-structured interviews, I find that tourism has both negative and positive impacts on this society, and I offer policy recommendations to help better integrate and advocate for local culture.
